Abstract
Historians, criminologists, sociologists, and legal scholars examine the history of policing in the 19th and 20th centuries; the organization of police in both the United States and the English-speaking countries of Australia, Canada, Great Britain, and India; relations between Federal, State, and local agencies; private police and security organizations; police and crime control; problem solving and community policing; and the effects of technological advances on policing. Such issues as unionization, internal review, legal constraints, alternative crime control approaches, and community relations are addressed in the context of the future of police organization. 108 footnotes, 5 tables, and 1,579 references
