Tampering with a consumer product, threatening to do so, or communicating false information is a crime.
Abstract
Although the vast majority of tampering reports are unfounded, each report must be taken seriously because deaths can occur. Coordination of local, State and Federal agencies with affected businesses is required, and when an incident occurs, an interagency crisis management team of these agencies should be activated. Response policy seeks to protect the public, apprehend perpetrators, notify others, and protect private property. Procedures are outlined for liaison among other agencies, handling of incoming information, risk analysis to determine response, notification of agencies and businesses, and crime scene management.
