THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS DOCTORAL STUDY IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PLANNING MODEL FOR THE INTEGRATION OF WORK-RELEASE PARTICIPANTS INTO MANUFACTURING FIRMS.
Abstract
THE PRIMARY SOURCE OF DATA USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODEL WAS A SURVEY OF ATTITUDES OF EMPLOYEES OF MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN TENNESSEE TOWARD INMATE WORKERS AND THEIR EMPLOYMENT IN PRIVATE INDUSTRY. THE FIRST SECTION PRESENTS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY, DEFINES THE PROBLEM, AND DISCUSSES THE PURPOSE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY. TERMS ARE DEFINED, THE PROCEDURES USED IN CONDUCTING THE RESEARCH ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT IS OUTLINED. RELEVANT LITERATURE IS THEN SURVEYED. REPORTS OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH DEALING WITH ATTITUDES RELEASES, ARE REVIEWED. THEORETICAL CONCEPTS TOWARD THE EMPLOYMENT OF VARIOUS SPECIAL EMPLOYEE GROUPS, INCLUDING WORK RELEASES, ARE REVIEWED. THEORETICAL CONCEPTS APPROPRIATE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODEL ARE ALSO EXAMINED. OTHER TOPICS SURVEYED INCLUDE THE NATURE AND PHILOSOPHY OF WORK RELEASE; THE THEORETICAL STATUS OF THE CONCEPT OF ATTITUDE; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR; AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ATTITUDE CHANGE AND BEHAVIORAL CHANGE. A DESCRIPTION OF THE SAMPLE USED FOR THE ATTITUDE SURVEY IS PROVIDED, AND THE PROCEDURES USED IN COMPARING AND ANALYZING THE DATA ARE DISCUSSED. THE STUDY FORMAT COMPARES AND ANALYZING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ATTITUDES OF THE RESPONDENTS AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL, SIZE OF THE FIRM, KIND OF INDUSTRY, SKILL LEVELS INVOLVED, AND THE AGE, EDUCATIONAL AND INCOME LEVEL, AND SEX OF THE RESPONDENTS. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF THE FINDINGS AND THE INTRODUCTION OF A MODEL FOR INTEGRATING WORK RELEASE PARTICIPANTS INTO MANUFACTURING FIRMS. PROGRAM GOALS, ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS, OBSTACLES TO GOAL ATTAINMENT, AND PROGRAM PROCESSES ARE DISCUSSED. FINALLY, A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED, ALONG WITH OBSERVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS RELATING TO FUTURE RESEARCH AND MODEL IMPLEMENTATION. ATTITUDE STATEMENTS, A MODIFIED INSTRUCTION SHEET AND ATTITUDE SURVEY INSTRUMENT, THE RESULTS OF A PRETEST OF THE ATTITUDE SURVEY INSTRUMENT, LETTERS TO THE CHIEF EXECUTIVES OF SAMPLE FIRMS, AND A LETTER TO THE SAMPLE SUBJECTS ARE APPENDED. REFERENCES ARE NOTED. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (KBL)
