This report on crime in Missouri in 1996 reveals that the State has experienced significant reductions in violent crime over the past 2 years; overall crime decreased 0.4 percent between 1995 and 1996, while violent crime declined 9.7 percent between 1994 and 1995 and 10 percent between 1995 and 1996.
Abstract
A total of 254,950 crime index offenses were reported in 1996, for one index crime every 1.9 minutes. The cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means in 23.1 of every 100 crime index offenses. Violent offenses made up 11.6 percent of the total number of crimes. These included 391 murders, 1,422 forcible rapes, 8,980 robberies, and 18,871 aggravated assaults. The 225,286 property index offenses included 42,675 burglaries, 157,576 thefts, 22,889 motor vehicle thefts, and 2,146 arsons. One property offense occurred every 2.2 minutes. The cases were cleared by arrest or exceptional means in 19.8 of every 100 property index offenses. Tables, figures, maps, and glossary
