This CD-ROM provides detailed case studies of well-known serial killers throughout the world and presents expert commentary on the psychology, behavior patterns, and investigations of serial killers in general and in particular.
Abstract
The “Overview” section of the CD-ROM defines serial murder; discusses the categorization of serial killers; examines the family backgrounds of serial killers; and considers the commission of serial murder, the investigation and apprehension of serial killers, and the links between demographics and the emergence of serial killers. A section on “case studies” includes the following serial killers: Berkowitz, Bianchi/Buono, Bundy, Chikatilo, Dahmer, Gacy, Gein, Jack the Ripper, Lucas/Toole, Manson, Ramirez, Rolling, Starkweather/Fugate, and Wuormos. A section on “Criminology” focuses on investigative techniques that can lead to the detection and apprehension of serial killers, including criminal profiling, nationwide criminal justice information systems, and forensic analysis. This section also discusses what makes a serial killer, with attention to family background, categories and motivation, sexual homicide, and insanity and treatment. A “Maps” section shows the location of crimes committed by serial killers worldwide. A “Library” describes various publications devoted to the topic of serial killers; and a “Photo Gallery” presents pictures of various killers, along with their crime scenes, their drawings and writings, evidence collected, and forensic analysis. The backgrounds of expert commentators (forensic psychologists and psychiatrists and FBI investigators who have specialized in serial-killer investigations).
