The introduction of microcomputers and mobile data terminals (MDT's) has had a great impact on patrol operations in police departments across the country.
Abstract
In Stockton, Calif., MDT's have reduced radio traffic, increased arrests and recovery of stolen property, decreased response time, improved supervision and morale, and resulted in savings in costs and report-filing time. In St. Petersburg, Fl., officers use portable computers to write and file reports in the field. Computer-aided dispatch systems prioritize calls for dispatch and provide the basis for ongoing incident and investigation data entry and retrieval. In addition to its navigation capabilities, the LORAN (LOng RAnge Navigation) system provides a means for efficient vehicle tracking and can considerably reduce police response times. A number of systems are available for issuing parking tickets. In addition to printing tickets, these systems also automatically enter such data as time, date, and issuing officer; check information against hot sheets or scofflaw lists; and electronically transfer data to the host computer. A list of companies and their products is included.
