The Methamphetamine Information Program (MIP) described in this paper is an easy-to-use computer software program that provides information on various aspects of methamphetamine.
Abstract
The MIP, a Windows-based interactive software program, consists of more than 100 display screens, including collections of still screens, various interactive screens, input selection screens, 9 drug calculator screens, and 9 other calculator screens. The calculators pull-down menu presents the user with a choice of the seven most commonly encountered clandestine synthesis methods. For each method there is a calculator (software) available. The calculations performed involve the amount of precursor, the yield, and the amount of product that can be expected during the clandestine manufacture of methamphetamine. In addition to calculators, the MIP provides general information; chemical information; and information on synthesis, advanced options, tools, and health and safety. A photo gallery is also presented. The investigator at the scene of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory can use MIP in a portable computer to obtain information needed in the investigation. MIP can also be used by the laboratory chemist who is investigating methamphetamine-related exhibit material. Educators can use MIP in training forensic chemists, clandestine lab investigators, and the judiciary in the nature of methamphetamine and clandestine laboratories. Prosecutors can use MIP to present information to juries in methamphetamine cases. Information is provided on how to obtain a copy of MIP.
