RESEARCH ON THE OPERATION OF GREAT BRITAIN'S MENTAL HEALTH ACT, WHICH RESULTED IN THE RELEASE OF MANY PATIENTS FROM MENTAL HOSPITALS TO COMMUNITY PROGRAM.
Abstract
THIS POLICY HAS PRODUCED A MARKED INCREASE IN THE ADMISSION OF EX-PATIENTS TO PRISONS FOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES. THE MENTALLY ABNORMAL OFFENDER, INCAPABLE OF SURVIVAL IN SOCIETY WITHOUT SUPPORT, HAS OFTEN TURNED TO PETTY CRIME. EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THE PROCEDURE HAS BENEFITED NEITHER SOCIETY NOR THE OFFENDER-PATIENTS.
