A 34-year-old male survivor of incest talks about the secrecy surrounding incest and the suffering he experienced after living in an abusive home for over 17 years.
Abstract
The author was abused by his alcoholic father and by an uncle, while his mother denied that anything was happening. He focuses on the recovery process rather than on his incest experiences, with the goal of helping other male incest survivors. He discusses several aspects of recovery, including trust, addiction, physical problems, sexuality, destructive relationships, amnesia, troubling dreams, feelings, depression and suicidal thoughts, helping professionals, isolation, and intimacy. The author recommends several approaches to facilitate recovery, such as traditional talk therapy, self-help groups, bodywork and nontraditional healing, imagery and visualization, meditation, connecting with nature, retreats and workshops, prayer and solitude, love, and forgiveness. 40 references
