Abstract
Although most crimes are committed by men, the editors of this book point out that the focus in academic considerations of crime usually has been on women. The dominant theoretical models rarely have gone beyond the simple association of masculinity with machismo. This book, purported to be the first collection of essays to challenge mainstream criminology by taking the social construction of masculinity as its focus, brings together a broad range of criminologists with established reputations from three continents who focus on masculinity when looking at crime. The aim of this collection is to ask some questions and to encourage the development of a more humane, as well as realistic approach to crime, victimization and criminal justice, not only by academic criminologists but by professionals. This volume is designed to appeal to teachers and students of criminology, sociology and gender studies, as well as to criminal justice practitioners.References, index
