This is a three-part statistical report containing various data about inmate population, staff, costs, and procedures collected from 44 counties with jail populations larger than 1,000.
Abstract
The information contained in the first part includes peak jail population figures and the date they occurred; population as of December 31, 1992; average daily bookings for December 1992; number of security staff; inmate to staff ratio; classification of security staff and entry-level salary; average cost per inmate per meal; and average daily health care cost per inmate. In the second part, all but one of the counties provided information on square miles covered by the agency; number of employees; key positions held by women; where inmate property is stored; where the inmate canteen is located; how inmates are reimbursed for lost items; which inmates are isolated from the general population; and how the inmate welfare fund is managed. The last section of the report contains a list of observations about changes in the jail system over the last 10 years and some projections about the next 10 years.
