This article discusses the rise in severe verbal and physical assaults in the workplace and how to prevent, predict, and respond to such violence.
Abstract
A 1979 study in the United Kingdom identified those types of workers most at risk of assault, including hospital employees, ambulance personnel, residential care workers, and government employees in select departments (particularly those dealing with social services). Reasons for the increase in violent outbursts included an increase in the number of persons with personality disorders or mental confusion among the general population, as well as the difficult economic times which reduces resources and increases anxiety and frustration. In terms of predicting violence, the author identifies a number of personal factors which come into play, as well as situational factors and outside influences. Suggestions for responding to violence in the workplace are provided and discussed. The article concludes with suggestions for the prevention of assaults. 15 references
