Abstract
Current statutory law is outlined for the individual States. Some States are included in more than one of the general categories. Citations of case law are summarized. A bibliography of 1 book, 10 studies, and 17 articles is provided, along with a referral to a clearinghouse offering a more extensive listing. Individual articles in the package are devoted to the subjects of the marital rape exemption in criminal law; developments in favor of battered women in New Jersey and Massachusetts; and, from an address to the New York County Lawyer's Association, a discussion of the misconceptions surrounding marital rape. Ten common beliefs about marital rape are addressed, focusing on the misconception that it is not a serious problem, that it is not offensive, that prosecution is pointless or motivated by revenge, and that the State has no business dealing with a couple's bedroom affairs.
