This report discusses the prevalence of marijuana use among youths aged 12 to 17 and how academic performance is impacted by drug use.
Abstract
According to the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 13 percent of youths aged 12 to 17 used marijuana at some point during 1999. Breaking this number down by race, the survey found that 15 percent of white youths, 13 percent of Hispanic youths, 9 percent of Black youths, and 6 percent of Asian youths had used marijuana at some point during 1999. The survey also found that the rate of marijuana use among this age group was the same for females and males. In terms of academic performance, rates of past year marijuana use were higher among those youths who reported receiving lower grades in school. The survey reports that those students who earned a D or an F were more than four times as likely to have used marijuana in the past year. 5 Figures
