The activities and achievements of the Adult Probation Department of the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona are reported for 1977.
Abstract
The report briefly describes the county's probation system, the principles and objectives of the probation department, and a reorganizational effort undertaken during the year. The activities of each component of the department are then highlighted, with attention to probation sentencings, employment services for probationers, probation caseloads, staff development services, special studies and projects, volunteer services, probation programs, and probation terminations. The tabular and graphic data indicate that 2,649 adults were placed on probation in the county by the superior court. Of that number, 96 percent were seen prior to sentencing with a presentence investigation report being forwarded to the courts. Of the total number of persons placed on probation, 86 percent were male and 14 percent were female. Whites accounted for 64 percent of the total number of new probation grants during the year, followed by Mexican-Americans and blacks. Increases over 1976 were recorded in the numbers of presentence investigation reports submitted, of defendants sentenced for felonies, and of probation grants. An organizational chart is included.
