Management issues and techniques in England's probation service are addressed in this compilation of articles, particularly with respect to organizational and work force issues, empowerment, teamwork, and the importance of information systems.
Abstract
The first article traces the rise of management thought in the English probation system and describes organizational models for probation practice. Subsequent articles look at probation service management in terms of current and future issues, strategic dimensions of probation service management, and the paradox of professional practice in management and empowerment. Other articles explore the role of information systems in probation service management, corporate management and partnerships in probation, the purchase and provision of offender services in the United States, and probation management structures and partnerships in the United States. Case studies from England and the United States highlight structural and practice implications of partnerships between probation and other service providers. References, notes, and figures
