Personal computers (PCs) can help security managers better identify and manage those responsibilities that are critical factors of success.
Abstract
These critical success factors include: providing for the safety and protection of personnel, facilities, property, and information; conducting and managing investigations; providing education and training programs; promoting the department's image; and hiring and keeping quality personnel. PCs provide four basic tools that can aid managerial decisionmaking and enhance performance and effectiveness. Spreadsheet programs can assist in effective budget planning, modeling and forecasting, and recordkeeping. Data base management systems collect, retrieve, and store information and generate reports. Applications include risk assessment, personnel management, and investigation. Graphics capabilities can provide visual enhancements to educational capabilities that can increase and organize information flow. PC prices have been steadily declining, and many brands are available in a number of price ranges dependent on brand name, add-ons, and technical capability. A basic PC package should cost between $1,000 and $3,000. When purchasing a PC, the security manager should seek the advice of knowledgeable friends and deal with reputable local dealers. A course in personal computing can enhance learning and reduce anxiety.
