This report addresses microcomputer security in the home and the office, covering the physical site, hardware and software, the data base, communications, insurance, legal issues, and disasters.
Abstract
An introduction to microcomputers emphasizes the rapidly growing use of these machines by businesses and the need for enhanced security. An overview of security management considerations discusses security awareness training, vulnerability assessment, documentation, and security classification standards. The report outlines specific measures to protect the microcomputer from unauthorized access and environmental hazards such as static electricity and water seepage. Measures to protect the hardware, software, and data files are detailed. Because integration into a communcations system like electronic mail or teleconferencing poses new threats, the report addresses devices designed to reduce these vulnerabilities. Other security issues reviewed include establishment of an audit trail; the coverage and costs of microcomputer insurance; and legal protection for software through copyright, trade, and patent law as well as employee contracts. The final sections consider (1) preventive maintenance through lubrication and cleaning and (2) disaster preparedness and recovery. The appendix lists products and services recommended in the report. Checklists accompany each section.
