'MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVES' IS A PROCEDURE FOR ESTABLISHING PERFORMANCE GOALS FOR INDIVIDUALS AND UNITS WITHIN ORGANIZATIONS AND FOR CONCENTRATING MANAGEMENT EFFORTS ON THOSE GOALS.
Abstract
IT INVOLVES AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: INTROSPECTION; STRUCTURED TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PEOPLE ABOUT JOB PRIORITIES AND PERFORMANCES; ANALYSIS OF FUNCTIONAL-ORGANIZATIONAL DISCREPANCIES; DEFINITION OF SPECIFIC DESIRED ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MANAGERS AND UNITS. THE FIFTH ANNUAL SUPERVISORY BOARD CONFERENCE PROVIDED A TRAINING SESSION IN MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVES WITH A CONCOMITANT FOCUS ON THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SUPERVISORY BOARD MEMBER. THE CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY 60 SUPERVISORY BOARD MEMBERS FROM THE SIX STATES IN REGION VIII, LEAA AND BY 15 STATE AND REGIONAL OFFICE PERSONNEL. THIS REPORT CONTAINS THE MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVES (MBO) MATERIALS UTILIZED IN THE CONFERENCE. THE TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, FAST (FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS SYSTEMS TECHNIQUE) PROGRAM PLANNING, PROJECT EVALUATION, AND TWENTY WAYS TO KILL MBO. A GLOSSARY OF MANAGEMENT TERMS AND AN EVALUATION REPORT ON THE WORKSHOP ON MBO ARE ALSO INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
