This volume presents the findings from a literature review and a national survey of wardens and makes 10 recommendations for corrections management and nine recommendations for corrections research.
Abstract
The literature review covered the last 20 years and was supplemented by an analysis of the managerial material in each State corrections agency annual report. Results revealed that most of the literature lacked theoretical grounding or an analysis of potential relationships or similarities with other data. The survey aimed to determine how much the literature reflected the wardens' management styles, problemsolving techniques, and decisionmaking approaches. Findings revealed that corrections management largely reflects the literature in that it has inconsistencies, an emphasis on personnel experience, and an inward focus. These results were used to develop a perspective focusing on a humane and caring relationship between manager and staff. Management theory of the past three decades supports this approach, which requires a change in traditional views of the role of correctional administrators, officers, institutions, and surrounding communities. Index, appended survey instrument and abstracts of 100 documents, and 260 references
