This manual explains how to start, conduct, and promote the Molesters Anonymous (M.AN) Program, a model self-help program for child molesters that provides comprehensive counseling in a community setting.
Abstract
In the M.AN Program, molesters attend weekly meetings with others having the common goal of eliminating sexually abusive behaviors. Group sessions focus on the development of alternative behaviors to counter molestation urges. A featured technique is 'thought stoppage,' which requires concentrating on an unwanted thought for a short period and then, on signal, eliminating it from consciousness. The technique requires continuous practice. Other techniques used are relaxation exercises and the 'buddy' system, which provides on ongoing supportive network to reinforce alternatives to molesting behavior. In addition to describing program processes, the manual details characteristics of pedophiles, describes participant roles, and explains how to start and promote a group. The appendix contains sample promotional materials, a brochure, the program guide, and a sample networking request. 14-item bibliography.
