EXAMINATION OF MATZA'S THESIS THAT MAN IS A SUBJECT, NOT AN OBJECT, AND THAT THEREFORE MUCH SOCIOLOGICAL INQUIRY INTO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR HAS BEEN FUNDAMENTALLY MISCONCEIVED IN RELATION TO ITS METHODS AND THEORETICAL CONCEPTS.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS ARGUE THAT ALTHOUGH MATZA IS AWARE OF AN INTIMATE CONNNECTION BETWEEN CONCEPTION OF MAN, SOCIOLOGICAL METHODOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY, HIS EXPLICATION OF THE REALTIONSHIP IS UNTENABLE. THEY MAINTAIN THAT, AS A CONSEQUENCE, THE PRECISE WAY IN WHICH HIS VIEW OF THE NATURE OF MAN IS INTENDED TO DIFFER FROM THE CONCEPTIONS WHICH HE CRITICIZES REMAINS OBSCURE AND THAT HE HAS NOT JUSTIFIED HIS THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL RECOMMENDATION.
