This paper provides a selective review of the research into the prevalence and effects of male sexual assault.
Abstract
The paper outlines findings from experimental studies showing that reactions to male sexual assault victims vary according to both the victim's sexual orientation and the perpetrator's gender. The paper considers victims of both male and female perpetrators, and discusses gay and heterosexual victims in relation to their specific needs. It considers the needs of transgendered victims as well as those of the sexual partners of male sexual assault victims. There are many issues that need to be addressed in counseling and treating male sexual assault victims: (1) counselors' awareness of male sexual victimization; (2) knowledgeable support services that understand the specific needs of male victims; (3) support staff understanding of transgender issues; (4) support services for victims' sexual partners and relatives; and (5) preparation of police and medical services for the needs of male sexual assault victims.
