In January, 1992, the FBI established the Safe Street Violent Crime Initiatives to promote a coordinated effort between the FBI and local law enforcement to locate and apprehend violent criminals and to eliminate street, gang, and drug-related violence.
Abstract
There are four task forces within the Safe Streets program: violent crimes, fugitive, violent crimes/fugitives, and interstate theft major offenders. The type of task force established in a specific region depends upon the identified crime problems there. Task forces have multiple benefits for local agencies: maximization of resources, elimination of duplication of investigation and wasteful expenditures of money, improved cooperation and coordination, increased operational intelligence bases, FBI reimbursement for officers working overtime, FBI provision of cars and specialized equipment to participating agencies, and FBI provision of specialized training. The Safe Streets program tries to involve the community in the war against crime by improving the relationship between the FBI, local police, and citizens.
