This article briefly describes how the Kenosha, Wisconsin Police Department's crime prevention efforts and strategies went from part-time to a full-time crime prevention unit.
Abstract
Up until 2005, Kenosha, WI was able to maintain two school resource officers, in part-time positions, to plan crime prevention activities. However, incidents involving gang-related behavior and adult bullying forced Kenosha to establish a full-time crime prevention unit. Two officers were assigned to the unit with the objective to assist patrol and investigations solve problem and close cases. In order for the crime prevention unit to succeed, it would need the support of the police chief, the administration, the city leaders, the community, and most importantly the patrol officers and detectives. Kenosha was successful in achieving a team commitment, and with these tools in place the crime prevention unit puts the responsibility for preventing crime back into the hands of everyone.
