This article discusses the acquisition and use of tailor-made technology at one detention facility.
Abstract
Officials at the Ware County Justice Facility, Waycross, GA, insist on the latest technology to aid them in developing one of the most efficient detention operations in the State. The officials work closely with their architect and with their construction manager. One major advantage of this method of project development is simultaneous production and equipment selection. At the Ware County facility, databases integrated into the facility's control stations give operations personnel instant access to detailed information about each inmate. The system can be expanded to include bar-coded wristbands that can be scanned with wireless handheld PC/scanners to provide information to officers instantly and remotely. The central control room houses graphic control panels, closed circuit television monitoring equipment, and wireless connectivity, all of which aids effective facility management. An additional control room contains a touch-screen and multi-camera feed as part of the overall system. The article concludes that, by evaluating long-term budgetary considerations while incorporating the most current/proven technology, a facility can significantly reduce the man hours required for operation and maintenance on a daily basis.
