The results of Maine's 1979 county jail inspections are presented for each of the State's counties.
Abstract
Jail inspection reports are given for 14 counties. The reports present information on the number of inmates and staff; on the number of inmate suicides, deaths, and escapes; on the average overnight population; and on administrative procedures employed, such as the use of a jail log, of written rules and regulations for jail employees, and of juvenile records. Results also concern the food service, sanitation, (i.e., cleaning supplies, vermin control), custody and security matters, treatment of adult females and juveniles, inmate control and discipline, medical and health service, inmate activities and programs, and religious services. Other items surveyed were library and recreational services, the operation of a commissary and work release programs, inmates' rights, educational release programs, building and equipment concerns, and plumbing and electrical services. Comments, future plans, and recommendations are also mentioned for each report. An overall rating of 'good,' 'fair,' and 'poor' is attached to each county's report along with a few comments.
