Tool marks are used as examples in this argument in support of the exclusion of specimens based upon the comparison of individual characteristics.
Abstract
No single arbitrary standard exists for what constitutes "sufficient" criteria for tool mark analysis. Most tool mark examiners agree that what constitutes a match, non-match, or exclusion between two compared specimens depends largely upon the criteria chosen by each individual examiner. Consequently, researchers disagree as to the conclusions that can be drawn from physical comparisons. The discussion identifies the logical underpinnings of this type of decision and considers the allowable conclusions. 1 figure and 17 references (Author abstract modified)
