THIS LIST OF 30 SCHOOLS WITH EXEMPLARY SCHOOL SECURITY PROGRAMS INCLUDES A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM COMPONENTS AND A DISCUSSION OF THE COST-BENEFIT OF VARIOUS SECURITY MEASURES.
Abstract
THESE SCHOOLS WERE SELECTED FROM A SAMPLE OF 97 WHOSE ADMINISTRATORS HAD RESPONDED TO A QUESTIONNAIRE ON SCHOOL SECURITY PROGRAMS. THE SCHOOLS ARE CATEGORIZED UNDER ONE OF FOUR PROGRAM TYPES, INCLUDING (1) BUILDING SECURITY, WHICH RELIES ON USE OF GUARDS, PATROLS, AND ALARM SYSTEMS; (2) TARGET HARDENING, WHICH INDICATES INSTALLMENT OF PHYSICAL SECURITY EQUIPMENT SUCH AS SPECIAL GLASS AND FENCES AND ELIMINATION OF UNNECESSARY ACCESS POINTS; (3) ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FOR CRIME PREVENTION; AND (4) CURRICULUM INNOVATION, WHICH INCLUDES ESTABLISHMENT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR ENCOURAGING STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN CRIME PREVENTION AND FOR ALTERING STUDENTS' MORAL AND VALUE SYSTEMS. CRITERIA FOR SELECTING SECURITY PROGRAMS WERE THEIR ABILITY TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE INCIDENTS IN RELATION TO DOLLARS EXPENDED, THEIR ADAPTABILITY, THEIR COMPREHENSIVENESS, AND THEIR COMPARATIVE SOPHISTICATION AND INNOVATION.
