This study offers critical prevalence data regarding the victimization of military women.
Abstract
From the findings of the study, it appears that Air Force women have a higher lifetime risk for sexual victimization than their civilian counterparts. Numerous studies that had been previously performed indicated sexual victimization was a problem within civilian and military populations but there was no uniformity of methodology, focus, minimal military surveys, no established assessment protocols, and the studies did not build upon each other, resulting in a significant variation in research findings. This study set out to establish a systematic survey of U.S. Air Force women on active duty and to allow comparability with the National Women’s Survey, one of the most scientifically rigorous civilian studies ever conducted. A stratified random sample of 2,018 active duty U.S. Air Force women completed a telephone survey dealing with sexual assault and harassment. Limitations of the study are discussed. Tables, references
