This paper describes five stages of development -- passive demanding, active demanding, anal passive, anal aggressive, and genital -- and presents implications for criminal behavior.
Abstract
The passive demanding individual is regressed, immature, and dependent. He has inadequate coping skills, may be sexually masochistic, and tends to engage in prostitution and child abuse, larceny or shoplifting, and addictions such as drug abuse. The active demanding behavior type is pleasure-oriented, intolerant of authority, has a tendency toward chronic visceral problems, and, when mentally disturbed, tends to have an affective disorder. This type's crimes are thrill-seeking and may include rape, transvestism, assault, and burglary or robbery. The anal passive type is judgmental, rigid, ruminative, and fixated at a presocialized level. His crimes may include forgery, embezzlement, receiving, and carrying a concealed weapon. The anal aggressive is adaptive, seeks challenges, and is compulsive. He usually works with an accomplice, plans his crimes, and likes to control and compete against larger social institutions. The genital type venerates individual freedom, does not hinder others from living their lives, and offers help only when requested. Crime is antithetical to this type. Intermediate to these stages are the hysterical type, the episodic, and the obsessive compulsive. In addition, combination types, involving two major levels of maturity, may be found. 4 references.
