This paper describes a major development in the teaching of legal studies in Victoria, Australia, subsequent to the introduction of commercial and legal studies in the eleventh grade in 1972.
Abstract
The commercial and legal studies for senior high school curriculum aims to provide an understanding of the interrelationship of law and society, the social function of law, and the position of the individual within a social legal framework. Junior high schools are also teaching law-related subjects as part of commercial principles and practice and consumer education. At the college-entry level, academically-oriented students must take twelfth-year courses in legal studies, law and society, commercial and legal studies, law or law studies. An introduction to law is taught in middle-level vocational courses and at the secondary technical level. In addition, development in the State of Victoria was initiated by the local Council of Adult Education: a series of discussions on the subject of youth and the law coordinated by a lecturer in legal studies. The series was designed for youth officers, probation officers, clergy, and anyone working with young people, and individual sessions covered such areas as youth rights, contacts with the police, children's court, and probation officers.
