This is a law school text book containing the leading United States Supreme Court decisions in the areas of investigation and prosecution of crime.
Abstract
This text book is designed for use mainly by law students. It contains the leading United States Supreme Court decisions which have developed constitutional principles in the area of criminal justice. The text begins with a table of cases but does not provide citations. It is organized into 17 chapters beginning with selected provisions of the Constitution and then going from the investigative aspects of a criminal case through to the prosecution and sentencing. Cases are not published in their entirety. Material irrelevant to criminal justice was omitted as was material that is repetitious within a case or a line of cases, historical background that is not important for constitutional development and separate opinions of the Justices that do not illuminate existing constitutional principles. Concurring and dissenting opinions are included only if they make a substantial contribution to the topic on which the editor is focusing. Several cases from the 1992-93 term of the Court have been included, although only time will tell if they can be considered leading cases.
