The four scenes depict strategies police supervisors can use to counsel subordinates experiencing performance problems or career indecision.
Abstract
In frank exchanges, supervisors attempt to understand the reasons behind patrol officers' excessive drinking and poor physical condition, often learning that the officers' resentment stems from being passed over for promotion. Supervisors suggest that these officers obtain medical advice and exhibit some progress before meeting again. In another case, the supervisor recommends that an officer, under pressure from his wife to take a job in another town, consider his advancement potential at this new job, as well as other factors such as driving time that might influence his decision. Another role play situation involves a performance review of an officer who rarely disciplines his staff; the advice here is to set objectives and to emphasize deference to rules and regulations.
