This manual was developed to assist agencies interested in developing a law-related education (LRE) program and to help juvenile justice practitioners and others understand what LRE is and how to design and implement an effective LRE program.
Abstract
Supported by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the LRE program is based on 16 pilot sites that provided a learning environment. For those interested in starting an LRE program, the manual provides theories, recommendations, materials, strategies, and resources for adaptation to the unique needs of each program. Suggestions for using the manual to plan an LRE program focus on using LRE networks and programs, obtaining administrative support, eliciting staff input and involvement, stating clear program outcomes, and using community resources. The manual covers what constitutes LRE, the application of LRE in juvenile justice settings, LRE curriculum and program design, LRE strategies, staff development, and networking.
