TO CLEARLY SPECIFY THE LABELING MODEL, THIS THESIS EXAMINES THE LABELING EFFECT ON POLICE APPREHENSION ON PERSONAL IDENTITY, SOCIAL BOND TO CONVENTIONAL SOCIETY, AND SELF-REPORTED INVOLVEMENT IN DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
WITH LONGITUDINAL DATA AND MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSIS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO SPECIFY THE EXPLANATORY POWER OF A DELINQUENT LABEL RELATIVE TO OTHER INFLUENCES ON PERSONAL IDENTITY, EXCLUSION, AND SECONDARY DEVIANCE. SEPARATE ANALYSES ARE CONDUCTED WITHIN EACH OF SEVERAL CONTINGENT CATEGORIES TO DETERMINE FOR WHICH POPULATION SUBGROUPS LABELING HAS THE MOST ADVERSE EFFECTS. FERRETING OUT CONTINGENT CONDITIONS IS CONDUCTED BY RUNNING SEPARATE REGRESSION ANALYSES WITHIN EACH VARIABLE'S CONTINGENT CATEGORY AND COMPARING THE UNSTANDARDIZED REGRESSION COEFFICIENT FOR THE LABELING VARIABLE. FINALLY, A FULLY SPECIFIED CAUSAL MODEL IS CONSTRUCTED FOR EACH OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF LABELING. FROM THIS CAUSAL MODEL, THE VARIOUS DIRECT AND INDIRECT EFFECTS CONNECTING THE VARIABLE ARE SHOWN. LITERATURE REVIEWS AS THEY RELATE TO THE IMPACT OF PUBLIC LABELING ON THE INDIVIDUAL ARE ALSO CONDUCTED. OVERALL, FINDINGS DO NOT PROVIDE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR THE LABELING THEORY. ALTHOUGH THE CORRELATIONS ARE GENERALLY STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT, THEIR VALUES ARE TOO SMALL TO BE OF SUBSTANTIVE SIGNIFICANCE. SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE PRESENTED. FOOTNOTES, TABULAR DATA, A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND DIAGRAMS ARE INCLUDED. THE QUESTIONNAIRES ARE APPENDED. (WJR)
