This manual presents policies and procedures for promotions in the Knoxville Police Department (Tennessee) and specifies tasks for various police job classifications.
Abstract
Among the issues covered in promotional policies and procedures are determination of the selection procedure; the promotional examination; the relative weights given seniority, performance, and education; notification; and the career development plan. The career development plan encompasses a career-development philosophy; career path alternatives; provisions common to all career paths; and career-development options for police officers, criminal investigators, specialists, and supervisors. Job specifications are provided for the four classifications of police officer, the three classifications of criminal investigator, the three specialist classifications, and the six supervisory classifications. The latter encompass sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, assistant chief, and chief of police. The classification specifications cover duties and responsibilities, minimum service time and training, minimum education/training requiremetns, inservice training, ratings on personnel evaluations, disciplinary actions, and examinations.
