THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A STUDY WHICH UNDERTOOK THE TASK OF MEASURING VANDALISM OF PUBLIC TELEPHONES IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, AND RELATING IT TO SOCIAL VARIABLES AS A FIRST STEP TOWARD ESTABLISHING EFFECTIVE PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
Abstract
THE VARIABLES EXAMINED INCLUDE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PHONE USE AND VANDALISM AND PHONE LOCATION AND VANDALISM. THE LATTER RELATIONSHIP WAS ANALYZED TO TEST TWO HYPOTHESES - THAT AREAS WITH HIGHER INDICTABLE OFFENSE RATES WOULD HAVE HIGH VANDALISM RATES AND THAT AREAS THAT ARE DENSELY POPULATED AND IN WHICH THE PHONES ARE POORLY LOCATED WOULD HAVE HIGH VANDALISM RATES. THE FINDINGS INDICATE A STRONG RELATIONSHIP ONLY BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF USE A PHONE RECEIVES AND THE AMOUNT OF VANDALISM IT IS SUBJECTED TO. SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING FREQUENTLY VANDALIZED PHONES VANDAL-PROOF ARE SET FORTH...EB
