In addition to providing background information on child sexual abuse, this manual guides educators in establishing Children's Self-Help Projects in preschools and elementary schools.
Abstract
Background information on child sexual abuse emphasizes the dynamics and effects of incest on the child. A discussion of the need for primary prevention is followed by descriptions of the philosophy and strategies used by the Children's Self-Help Project to prevent child sexual abuse. It aims to equip children with the skills to recognize when they are being sexually abused and how to report it to an appropriate adult. Educators are supplied with guides for planning and implementing the complete Children's Self-Help Project, from initial school personnel and parent workshops to the age-appropriate classroom workshops for children. Suggestions for successful intervention on behalf of victims are also included. These guidelines are based on the experience of concerned educators in developing, modifying, and presenting these programs. Detailed, word-for-word curricula for the two-session preschool and elementary school workshops are included. Guidelines for working with the school system and techniques for successful classroom management are provided. Appended bibliography and sample forms.
