Abstract
Temperature-sensing units monitor a police cruiser's inside temperature and alert the officer via page or audible alarm if the temperature becomes too hot for the dog inside. These units also will automatically roll a vehicle's windows down and activate a fan. Bailouts, such as the K-9 Remote System from Idaho Instrument, help officers deploy their dogs when they are away from their squad cars and need assistance. The officer presses a transmitter on his duty belt and the vehicle door opens to release the dog. Electric collars enable officers to control their dogs from a distance, eliminating problems of controlling the dogs from a distance without a leash. An aluminum insert placed in police vehicles enables officers to transport dogs safely and easily. These units replace a vehicle's backseat and are easier to clean. Protector vests provide ballistic protection for dogs as well as protection against cuts and slashes. This article also provides information on various K-9 services available for police, such as online videos that portray the latest K-9-related technologies, specialized K-9 teams available to departments for particular operations, and training programs.
