This report presents statistical data on the number of juveniles processed through the courts of the various counties of South Carolina during fiscal year 1977.
Abstract
Information is presented on juveniles referred to the courts by county; by month; by source of referral; and by age, race, and sex. Data indicate that well over 17,000 juveniles were referred to the courts during 1977. The heaviest concentration of cases referred occurred in Charleston, Spartanburg, Greenville, Richland, Anderson, and Lexington counties. Generally, more referrals were made during the first 6 months of the year for most counties and law enforcement agencies were the most frequent referring agency to the court. Of the 15,515 youths reported by race and sex for the State as a whole, 10,018, or almost 65 percent, were white and 5,497, or 35 percent, were black. Most referrals were for males and for those aged 15 and 16. The most frequent status offense by individual county was truancy, followed by 'ungovernable' and runaway. Information on neglect and abuse cases referred to the courts is also presented; statistical reports on juvenile cases from each court for the year 1976-77 are included. Tables and graphs are provided.
