Even though the juvenile justice system was established in India over 6 decades ago specifically to process cases of children involved in law violations, large numbers of children are still handled by adult courts.
Abstract
Criticisms of the juvenile system concern its dual role of both assessing the guilt and prescribing the treatment. There is also dissatisfaction with the actual functioning of the hybrid benches where social work is attempted in association with legal expertise. More concern should be placed on reforming the organizational setup of the juvenile court instead of just expanding it. Footnotes and 8 references are given. (Author abstract modified)
