Annotation

This chapter discusses trends in juvenile offenses and case dispositions.

Abstract

The chapter presents information in the following categories: (1) major policy shifts; (2) diversion and deinstitutionalization programs; (3) jail removal programs; (4) "New Age" juvenile justice: mediation, acupuncture, boot camps, drug treatment, privatization; (5) delinquency prevention programs; (6) "Just Deserts" in juvenile justice; (7) due process; (8) funding; (9) recent trends; (10) adjudication decisions; and (11) disturbing trends in offenses and case processing. The chapter concludes that recent crime legislation indicates lawmakers are not interested in spending money to search for effective and humane solutions for the problems associated with juvenile crime. In an era of boot camps, minimum mandatory sentences, "three strikes and you're out" policies, and the contracting of services to the lowest bidder, justice system policy may experience little improvement until the next national elections. Even then, there is just as much to fear as to hope for. The chapter includes discussion questions based on the information presented. Tables, references, cases cited
