Abstract
The census surveyed the numbers and kinds of juvenile detention facilities with a resident population of at least 50-percent juveniles. There were 375 detention centers; 56 shelters; 23 reception or diagnostic centers; 178 training schools, 98 ranches, forestry camps, or farms; and 257 halfway houses or group homes. There was a 100-percent response rate. Included in the survey are the total number of juveniles held as of December 31, 1977, as well as the breakdown of the numbers in each type of facility. Also presented are numbers and breakdown (by sex) of detention and status offenses for juveniles, numbers of full-time and part-time staff, as well as payroll and nonpayroll staff, breakdown of residential population and staff by race, and facility expenditures. There were 241 variables.
