This report presents data collected during 1980 through the Juvenile Court Reporting System concerning youths processed by courts with juvenile jurisdiction in Nebraska. These include 90 county courts and the 3 separate juvenile courts of Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy Counties.
Abstract
Tables present data on major and minor offense frequencies, on neglect/dependent frequencies, on the reasons for referral of juveniles, on the source of court referrals, and on total juvenile court dispositions and dispositions by county. Reasons for referral by age, race, sex, and ethnic group are also illustrated. There were 4,693 juvenile court referrals which reached final disposition in 1980, of which 3,932 (86.6 percent) were handled with petition, while 610 (13.4 percent) were handled without petition. Referrals for major offense categories accounted for 63.8 percent of the total number of cases, and minor offense referrals comprised 24.7 percent of the total. Most juvenile cases referred to court for major and minor offenses resulted in a disposition of formal probation. Juveniles aged 12 and 17 years had the largest proportion of referrals for major offenses, and 73 percent of referrals involved males. The largest referral category in all ethnic groups was for major offenses. County juvenile justice data and a table showing the total juvenile arrests in the State are appended. Tabular and graphic data are provided.
