Abstract
This publication is the 15th in a series of reports that present public expenditure and employment data oncivil and criminal justice activities in the United States. Over the past 15 years there have been significant changes in the methodology used to produce justice expenditure and employmentdata. Generally, 1971-79 and 1985 data are comparable, but data for 1980-84 were collected using a different methodology and are not completely comparable to the 1971-79 and 1985 data; data for1980-84 are comparable across that period. Readers interested in comparing the data in this report withthe data for 1971-79 and 1985 should do so only with a full understanding of the changes made and datalimitations described in the survey methodology section.
