These facts and figures on America's children and their families, originally compiled to inform the National Commission on Children's deliberations, provide a resource book of information assembled from a variety of Federal sources, private surveys, and scholarly research studies.
Abstract
An overview chapter outlines the historic social, economic, and cultural changes that have reshaped the American family over the past 20 years and the process by which children develop into healthy and competent adults. Subsequent chapters address areas of significant concern, namely, economic well-being, health, education, adolescents at risk, family strengths, and vulnerable children and families. Each chapter outlines recent information on the status of America's children and families and describes relevant Federal programs. Commission recommendations conclude this resource book. 479 footnotes, 30 figures, and 1 table
