This handbook is intended for use by Indian court clerks in the American Indian Court Judges and Clerks Training Program and as an easy reference in the future when they discharge their duties with the American Indian court system.
Abstract
The handbook discusses the conduct of jury trials in the general context of the tribal court, commenting on requirements for jury membership, payment of the juror fee, and procedures for impaneling the jury, delivering instructions, accepting a verdict, and concluding the trial. The remainder of the pamphlet consists of proposed texts of remarks to be made at certain points in the trial by the court clerk. These include introductory remarks to the jury panel, explanation to jury panel of voir dire, instructions to jurors before a criminal trial, instructions on juror's conduct during trial admonition, objections to rulings on evidence, voir dire questions, admonition at recess, and mandatory instruction upon discharge. Texts for a series of oaths conclude the pamphlet.
