This 1980 annual report highlights the activities and presents financial statements of the John Howard Society of Ontario (Canada), a province-wide voluntary agency supported by concerned citizens seeking solutions to the problems of crime and the criminal justice system.
Abstract
In addition to the traditional prison aftercare services provided by the society, 16 Ontario branches were involved in numerous activities affecting the lives of offenders and their families. These services included employment programs, residential programs, and attendance center programs, as well as jail visitation, a program for those convicted of impaired driving, and transportation services to enable wives and families to visit prisoners. A particular concern to the society is its increasing involvement in contracting with the Government to provide correctional programs. Issues currently of concern include conditional release, the implications of long-term imprisonment, alternatives to incarceration, capital punishment, the escalation of control and surveillance within institutions, prison living and working conditions, and the continuation of community and family contact and support for inmates. To involve citizens in the study of these issues, the society organizes speaking engagements, conferences, and seminars and distributes printed and audiovisual materials. Financial statements cover society assets and liabilities and the special purpose fund. Addresses and phone numbers of the society's branch offices are appended.
