A successful workshop presented at the American Jail Association's 1990 training conference analyzed employment discrimination in correctional facilities from a risk management point of view.
Abstract
The workshop examined employment contracts with individual employees, fundamental freedoms, and the obligation of administrators to provide a workplace free of illegal discrimination. The workshop also focused on a team development perspective and on the following qualities of team cohesion: recognition of interdependence, open and candid communication, trust, clearly understood goals, and risktaking. To reduce the risk and liability of job-related discrimination in the jail environment, the workshop recommends that facility administrators establish clear policies with executive commitment to implementation, update procedures and job performance standards, monitor common practices and enforce disciplinary standards, implement training focused on civil rights employment issues, require supervisors to brief all employees on their performance expectations, and establish role models.
